Fire detection solutions in air conditioning ducts

In a fire event, ventilation duct systems can convey smoke, hot toxic gases and flames from one area to another. Duct systems may also supply air to the fire, encouraging its growth. The effective control of smoke and air flow, through the use of devices such as dampers and shutters is an essential fire safety issue.

Why use a VESDA system?

The active sampling, tolerance to contamination and sensitivity of VESDA systems enables reliable sampling in air-conditioning ducts despite dilution by the high air flows. The sampling pipe of a VESDA smoke detector can be installed across the width of a duct. If any smoke is carried along by the air flow it will be detected by the VESDA unit and an alarm will be raised. Xtralis has conducted extensive testing of air sampling smoke detection in duct environments to determine the optimum installation and operational parameters.
