Smoke detection is required in many difficult environments such as:

Dusty mines, manufacturing plants and power generation facilities
Humid areas where steam or vapors are prevalent
Refrigerated storage facilities, kept at freezing temperatures
Laboratories and storage areas where corrosive chemicals are stored
Food manufacturing plants that require regular wash down

Traditional smoke detectors either do not work at all or work for a limited time in such environments. The dust, humidity or corrosive atmosphere will quickly destroy them.

A VESDA air sampling smoke detection system uses a sampling pipe network to draw air samples back to a remote detector. The pipe network is simply PVC pipe with holes drilled where sampling points are required. The PVC pipe is immune to the environment. It simply acts as a channel for air from the protected area to travel to a VESDA detector. The detector can be installed away from the difficult environment, allowing it to operate without being affected.
